Wedding Ceremonies

A wedding is the coming together of two people, whose hearts and spirits are entwined as one.  It is the desire to profess before the world the intention henceforth to walk the road of life together.  It is the celebration of mutual love and respect, and the promise to maintain a balance of harmony.

Playa Gay Weddings  offers you two memorable commitment ceremonies, very different from one another, but both deeply moving.

Non-Denominational Wedding Ceremony

An English-speaking minister leads a traditional, non-denominational wedding ceremony. This is a spiritual, not a legal, wedding ceremony.

One of the beautiful things about marriage is that while you unite to become one, you do not thereby become less yourselves, but more. For this is a union of true freedom, not possessiveness. You each have valuable qualities, which you bring to this marriage, and as you treasure your own uniqueness, and that of your partner, your relationship is elevated to that of a true spiritual union.

Dedication, love and joy can grow only when you nourish them together. Stand fast in that hope and confidence, having faith in your shared destiny just as strongly as you have faith in yourselves and in one another today. Only with this spirit can you forge a union that will strengthen and last for all the days of your lives.

Mayan Wedding Ceremony

A Mayan shaman leads this spiritual ceremony in the Mayan language. This is a spiritual, not a legal, wedding ceremony.

The service follows the actual traditions used by Maya in this region of Mexico. Two souls will be connected forever.

An altar is made. Four candles are lit on the four corners of the table, and one incense holder stands in the table's center.

The candles represent the four cardinal points (north, south, east and west) and the four gods that sustain the Mayan cosmology. The central flame is dedicated to Human and God (Mother Earth and Cosmos). The priest has the privilege of lighting this 5th flame, but can decide to let somebody else have this honor.

Mayan music with pre-Hispanic instruments will be performed before and during the ceremony.

Participants and guests can wear their own clothes, but they should dress in white or cream colors. Ties, metal jewelry and traditional western wedding clothing are not suitable for the wedding couple, just a white dress or guayabera and pants in a simple style. Shoes will not be worn by the wedding couple during the ceremony and are optional for guests.  Your guests will want to fully receive the ceremony's energy, and being barefoot lets them have close contact with Mother Earth.

News from Playa Gay Weddings

Don Luis, a local Mayan shaman, has performed dozens of weddings for our clients. Recently Don Luis was invited by the English Minister of Culture to Stonehenge for the Salisbury International Arts Festival. He hosted a traditional sun ceremony at the Neolithic Stonehenge monument.

Mayan dancers Hamba' Kan (meaning 'Echoes of the Cosmos'), a cultural group from the Itzaes tribe, descendents of the oldest Mayan tribe performed a traditional sun ceremony (the most sacred event in the Mayan calendar) rarely seen by anyone outside the Yucatan as the sunset between the stones as the full moon rose.

Ask us to see if Don Luis is available for your ceremony in Playa del Carmen....
